URBAN DESIGN

Urban design is typically the space around the building. It’s more about the urban landscape as opposed to the individual buildings. It’s not landscape design, it is more high-level and needs to be considered early on in the design process.

Urban design looks at the ‘flows’ through spaces, around the individual structures, and how people are going to use these spaces. This assessment in the early stages of design is a key part to determining where the buildings are situated and where the site lines are. Urban Design is included as part of most designs, because it’s important to understand how the site will work as a whole and assess everything before you leap into a design.

Most people will understand urban design as being associated with housing estates and town centres. Here at Pier Architecture, we think it is more than just the functional use of a space – urban design should encapsulate those outside spaces as an equally important part of the project.

PLANNING APPLICATIONS

Architects need to be involved in a planning application because you will have to submit some form of building design. In our opinion, architects are better placed to help clients with planning applications and permissions than planning consultants because we have a good understanding of most professions involved with the application and what is required to get permissions approved.

We also, on the whole, take our projects from inception to competition. So when we are working on feasibility studies, concept designs and urban designs we always have in the back of our minds that this project has to actually be approved – so we won’t come up with a fantastical design that is beyond the client’s budget or impossible to build.

The benefits of using Pier Architecture is that two of our architects have completed a planning and architecture degree that’s accredited by Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), and the Architects Registration Board (ARB) , so we have an exceptional understanding of the planning process.

We can deal with everything involved in planning applications across a broad spectrum of projects and sectors from residential to commercial to industrial.

We have a good understanding of the constraints of the planning system. As part of our design process, we will put together a team of experts and consultants to ensure we produce all relevant reports needed to get your permission approved.
Ensuring everything is supplied upfront means we have much higher success rater with our applications, saving our clients time and money.
